What Is a Backyard Studio Shed?

A custom studio shed is a standalone backyard structure built specifically for you. Unlike prefab kits you assemble yourself, our sheds are professionally designed and built to match your space, your style, and Colorado’s climate. Use it as a home office, art studio, yoga space, she shed, or personal gym,  the possibilities are yours to define.

Modern Shed Designs Built for Colorado

Our custom studio sheds feature sleek, contemporary designs with windows, clean lines, and durable materials suited for Colorado’s weather. From snowy winters on the Front Range to hot summer afternoons, your shed will be built to last.

Do I need a permit for a custom studio shed in Colorado?

In almost every case, yes, for two separate reasons. First, most Front Range cities require a building or zoning permit based on size. Here’s how it breaks down across our service area:

Denver — Zoning permit required for all sheds, regardless of size. Building permit also required for sheds over 200 sq ft or
taller than 8 ft.

Boulder (city) — Permit required for any shed with electrical. Only structures under 80 sq ft with zero utilities are exempt.

Boulder County — Permit required for sheds over 120 sq ft. Exempt structures cannot have utilities.

Jefferson County / Lakewood — Permit required
over 200 sq ft cumulative. Lakewood exempts up to 120 sq ft.

Arvada — Separate electrical permit required for all wiring, in addition to the building permit.

Fort Collins — Permit required for sheds over 120 sq ft or taller than 8 ft.

Thornton — Permit required for anything over 120 sq ft.

Colorado Springs — Zoning review required at 125 sq ft and above.

Second, Colorado requires a separate state electrical permit for any wiring work, this applies statewide, regardless of shed size or city. Since most of our studio sheds include electrical, this permit is almost always needed.

We’ve navigated permitting across the Front Range and will help guide you through the process for your specific location and project.

Can a custom studio shed be used year-round?

Yes. We build to Colorado weather standards. With proper insulation and electrical, which we can connect you with trusted local contractors to complete, your shed can be a comfortable four-season workspace
or retreat.
