Extend your growing season with the Juwel Kombi Cold Frame Greenhouse. A dual-function raised bed and cold frame greenhouse in one compact, elevated unit. While most gardeners have to choose between a raised bed or a season-extension cold frame, the Juwel combines both into a single space-saving design that protects plants from frost, wind, and pests year-round, at a comfortable working height.

What Is a Cold Frame Greenhouse?

A cold frame greenhouse is a low-profile, unheated structure with a transparent lid that traps solar heat to protect plants from cold temperatures. It acts as a buffer zone between your plants and the elements. Warm enough to extend your fall harvest, start seedlings weeks earlier in spring, and overwinter hardy herbs and greens through the coldest months. The Juwel takes this a step further by combining the cold frame with a fully functional raised bed, so you get two of the most effective season-extension tools in a single footprint.

How Does a Cold Frame Greenhouse Work?

The Juwel Cold Frame Greenhouse uses a polycarbonate lid to capture daytime solar energy and retain warmth overnight. The elevated raised bed frame keeps roots insulated from frozen ground while the vented lid lets you regulate temperature on warmer days. Simply prop it open to prevent overheating. No electricity, no heating system, no complicated setup. Just smart passive design that works with Colorado's climate, not against it.

Cold Frame Greenhouse and Raised Bed in One — Why It Matters

Most cold frames sit directly on the soil, requiring you to bend and kneel at ground level. Most raised beds are open to the elements — vulnerable to late frosts, early freezes, and temperature swings. The Juwel solves both problems at once:

  • Ergonomic working height — tend your plants without straining your back
  • Built-in season extension — the polycarbonate lid turns your raised bed into a cold frame greenhouse instantly
  • Better drainage — elevated beds shed excess moisture naturally
  • Pest barrier — keeps slugs, snails, and ground-level insects out
  • Flexible placement — works on patios, decks, gravel, or any flat surface
  • Two tools, one footprint — no need to buy a raised bed and a cold frame separately

This is the core differentiator that neither a standalone cold frame nor a standard raised bed can offer.

Extend Your Growing Season in Colorado

Colorado's shoulder seasons — March through May and September through November — are full of unpredictable late frosts and early freezes. A cold frame greenhouse gives Front Range gardeners a reliable way to push planting 4–6 weeks earlier in spring and keep greens, root vegetables, and herbs producing well into December. The Juwel's raised bed design adds another layer of warmth, since elevated soil heats up faster in spring and drains better after heavy snow. Whether you're in Golden, Denver, Littleton, or Boulder, this is one of the most practical season-extension investments available for our climate.

Best Plants to Grow in a Cold Frame

The Juwel's dual raised bed and cold frame design works especially well for:

  • Leafy greens: lettuce, spinach, arugula, kale, chard, and collard greens
  • Root vegetables: carrots, radishes, and beets
  • Herbs: parsley, cilantro, chives, and thyme
  • Seedlings: harden off transplants before moving them to larger beds
  • Overwintering crops: keep hardy greens producing through Colorado's coldest months

Cold Frame Greenhouse FAQs

What's the difference between a cold frame and a greenhouse?

A greenhouse is a large, often heated structure designed for year-round growing. A cold frame greenhouse is a compact, unheated alternative that uses passive solar heat — more affordable, easier to set up, and ideal for season extension rather than full-year tropical growing. The Juwel adds a built-in raised bed, making it a more versatile option than either product alone.

What's the difference between a cold frame and a raised bed?

A raised bed is an open growing container, great for soil control and drainage, but fully exposed to the elements. A cold frame is a season-extension tool with a transparent lid, but typically sits on bare ground. The Juwel Cold Frame Greenhouse combines both: a raised bed with an integrated polycarbonate cold frame lid, so you get the benefits of elevated growing and weather protection in one unit.

Can a cold frame greenhouse survive Colorado winters?

Yes — the Juwel's polycarbonate lid is built to handle freeze-thaw cycles. For the harshest weeks, adding a layer of frost cloth inside the frame provides extra protection for sensitive plants. Hardy greens like kale, spinach, and chard can often be harvested straight through a Colorado winter with the cold frame closed.

Does it require assembly?

The Juwel Cold Frame Greenhouse arrives largely pre-assembled. Most customers have it set up and ready to plant in under 30 minutes.
