Built to Last with Thermowood Construction

Thermowood is hemlock that's been heat-treated at high temperature rather than chemically treated. The process pulls moisture and organic compounds out of the cell structure, which means the wood doesn't absorb humidity the way untreated hemlock does. Practically: it resists warping, cupping, and rot, and it holds its shape through the freeze-thaw cycles that define a Colorado spring.

It also runs cooler to the touch than standard softwood at the same air temperature, which matters when you're leaning back against a wall at 175°F.

The Harvia KIP is made in Finland and sized correctly for the Duo's volume,  not undersized to hit a price point. It runs on two simple dials: one sets the temperature, the other turns the heater on or off. If you're comparing compact saunas across a few sites, these are the four things that actually separate them. Use this whether or not you end up buying from us.

Bench Depth & Seating Comfort for Two

Bench length is what most listings advertise. Bench depth is what determines whether you can sit cross-legged or lie down. The Duo's bench runs 19¾" deep , enough to sit comfortably with your feet up, though not deep enough to fully recline. Two adults sit side by side; one adult can stretch out lengthwise.

Anything under 16" deep is a perch, not a bench. If lying flat matters to you, you want a 4-person cabin, not a 2-person model, the footprint jump is real and worth knowing before you buy.

Heater Sizing & Stone Capacity

The rule of thumb for traditional saunas is roughly 1kW per 45–50 cubic feet of cabin volume, with more needed for outdoor units in cold climates. Cedar, hemlock, thermally modified spruce, and Thermowood all show up in this category at similar price points, and the marketing rarely explains the trade-offs. Cedar smells wonderful and resists rot naturally, but it's soft and dents. Untreated hemlock is affordable and stable indoors but less suited to year-round outdoor exposure. Thermally treated woods cost more upfront and hold up longest outdoors.

Electrical Requirements & Site Prep

This is the part people wish they'd read first. Handle it before the crate arrives and installation is a good day instead of a frustrating one.

What Your Electrician Needs to Know

The Duo needs 120V for the interior lighting and a dedicated 240V circuit for the heater. For an 8kW heater, most electricians will run a 240V circuit in the 40–60A range depending on wire distance and local code.  Confirm the exact requirement with your electrician and the manufacturer's manual before anyone starts digging a trench.

Two things worth knowing up front: electrical work almost always requires a permit even when the structure itself doesn't, and this is not a job for an extension cord or an existing garage outlet. Budget for a licensed electrician as part of the total cost.

Foundation and Clearance Requirements

At 910 pounds before anyone's inside it, the Duo needs a level, stable base:

• Level within about ½ inch across the length of the base. Gravel, pavers, or a concrete pad all work.
• Clear access path from where the truck can park to where the sauna will sit,  the crate is heavy and awkward.
• Airflow clearance on all sides so the exterior can dry between weather.
• Power access planned before placement, not after.

Caring for Your Outdoor Sauna in Colorado Weather

Seasonal Maintenance Checklist

After each session: Prop the door open and let the cabin air out. Wipe down benches with a damp cloth.

Monthly: Wipe interior surfaces with mild soap and a soft cloth. Skip anything abrasive or heavily scented,  it soaks into the grain and you'll smell it at 175°F for months.

Every six months: Pull and restack the heater stones. Check each one for cracks and chips and replace any that have degraded. Stones break down under repeated thermal cycling, and cracked stones restrict airflow through the heater.

Annually: Inspect the roof shingles and exterior seams after hail season. Treat interior benches with a light coat of sauna-grade paraffin oil if the wood is looking dry,  use only sauna-safe products, never standard wood sealers.

Colorado-specific: Our UV is brutal at altitude and will gray exposed exterior wood over time. That's cosmetic, not structural, but if you want to keep the original tone, plan on an exterior treatment every couple of years.

Can a small 2 person sauna go on a deck or patio?

Yes, provided the surface is level and rated for the load. At 910 pounds empty, the Duo is well within the capacity of most properly built decks, but if your deck is older or you're unsure of its construction, have it evaluated first. Pavers and gravel pads are the most common bases we install on.
